Helmen

In een op de tien wintersport ongevallen is sprake van hoofdletsel, dat kan voor het overgrote deel eenvoudig worden voorkomen door een helm te dragen. In steeds meer Alpenlanden is het dragen van een helm voor kinderen onder 15 jaar al verplicht. Ook volwassenen, zowel beginners als gevorderden, dragen steeds vaker een helm. Belangrijk is dat een helm, naast veilig, ook goed staat - vooral kinderen vinden het belangrijk dat een helm cool of stoer is, anders zullen ze de helm niet graag dragen.

Goedgekeurde helmen hebben een CE-markering. Voor wintersport helmen is dit EN 1077. Er zijn ook wintersporthelmen met een EN 1078 normering: dat is de fietshelm normering en deze is wat minder streng dan de EN 1077 normering. Let bij aanschaf van een helm op dat deze goed past en dat het gezichtsveld niet wordt belemmerd. Koop een helm nooit op de groei. Een integraalhelm (met kinbescherming) lijkt heel veilig en stoer maar is niet altijd veiliger: bij een val voorover kan de kinbescherming in de sneeuw happen waardoor de wintersporter over de kop zal slaan en er extreme krachten op de nek worden uitgeoefend. Frantzen levert in principe geen integraalhelmen.
